I believe the Darkling Lords' weapons are made from bronze. Part of it is that Darkstorm can be a cheap bastard used copper with tin and other metals in the alloy mixture to create bronze. But, realistically, real gold is too heavy and soft to make a sword out of it so, again, bronze is more durable and lighter than gold.

Basically, their axes and clubs look like they're made of gold, but they're not (because of the dull look or the warm-red shine it has). The main issue is that since the main ingredient is copper, the bronze will oxidize like copper. So, they're weapons, if not taken care of properly, will start looking like this.
