End of Chapter Notes: The first fic of the new year! This one took awhile but it was still fun to write. I have other WIPs in my folders and hopefully I'll finish one of them. Any who, I hope you enjoyed it and happy late new year's!

Suddenly a light touch of someone’s hand was on his shoulder, startlingly him. He looked up and saw Ectar beside him. “Ectar,” stammered Feryl.
“You looked troubled since the wedding,” explained Ectar. “What is it that made you broody?”
Feryl sighed, looking back to the scarlet skies. No matter how much he thought about how to word his feelings, it all sounded selfish to him.
“How do I put it?” He pondered. “Ever since Leoric and Fletchen met, well, I do enjoy her company, don't get me wrong, but I’ve been feeling-” he paused, he could feel his cheeks warming up.
Ectar nodded. “I see,” he acknowledged with a knowing smile.
Feryl buried his face into the palm of his hands. “I don’t know, Ectar. I feel like a fool for feeling this way,” said Feryl. “They deserve each other, they do, but I really did love him.”
Ectar listened intently as Feryl continued, “But I didn’t want to ruin what we already have; a brother’s love he would tell me. I thought I had accepted it.” He smiled weakly with their wedding vows still ringing in his ears. “I guess I was wrong.”
It was a bit embarrassing to admit but he was ready to cry.
The ex-cop didn’t know what to do for the heartbroken young man. Romance wasn’t exactly his field of expertise, but he couldn’t leave him alone to wallow either.
He gently squeezed Feryl’s shoulder as he spoke. “Feryl, give it some time. It’ll sting for awhile, but you’ll eventually get over it.”
“And if it doesn’t fully heal?”
“Then, you learn to live with it. Maybe you will find someone and share those fond memories with them.” Ectar reassured, “I think they’ll understand.”
Feryl thought about it for a moment, brewing in his words, and let out a heavy breath. It seemed as though some of the weight was lifted off his chest. “Ectar, thank you for listening.”
Ectar gave a slight smile to the knight. “Don’t mention it.”
“Um, just don’t tell any of it to Leoric. Okay?”
“Not a word of it.”
Feryl smiled softly, until his stomach growled. Ectar glanced at the three suns as he mentioned, “The mess hall is still serving breakfast, you know.”
“Right.” He hesitantly went ahead of him but asked, “Do you want to come along?”
Ectar leaned his back against the wall and answered, “I appreciate the offer, but I’m good.”
“Suit yourself.” And with that Feryl left with Ectar following behind.
He closed the door as he exited Feryl’s room; he had a feeling that the young knight will have it sorted out eventually. He knows it.
